Losing a carefully tuned channel list after a firmware update is frustrating, so I tested the built-in backup and restore tools on GX6605S receivers to see how dependable they are.

The USB-based backup function worked consistently across every board I tried, exporting channel lists, satellite parameters, and favorites into a single file in well under a minute. Restoring that file onto the same board model brought everything back exactly as configured, with no missing entries.

Cross-board restores were less consistent — moving a backup from one GX6605S variant to a slightly different board sometimes restored the channel list but dropped satellite-specific tuning data, requiring a quick re-scan to fully recover.

It’s good practice to take a fresh backup immediately before any firmware update, since a few boards in testing reset channel data automatically after flashing new software.

Verdict: The backup and restore tools work well within the same board model; just don’t assume a backup will transfer perfectly to a different variant.
